Welcome to the Old Kiln Light Railway


Surrey’s Only Industrial 2ft Gauge Railway, Owned & Operated by a group of volunteers who have collected diesel / steam locomotives, rolling stock, as well as other Narrow gauge relics

Hop aboard the charming narrow gauge railway in the rural Surrey countryside.

Situated in the Rural Life Living Museum, a peaceful, Open Air, Village museum, bordering RSPB Heathland; the Old kiln railway takes you on short but characterful journey, behind one of the many preserved locomotives from all walks of life.

From the forests of Portugal, to the Welsh Slate Quarries of Penrhyn, our fine collection of preserved locomotives and stock provides an abundance of railway history to discover and enjoy.

With the covid pandemic upon the world, railway across the UK are being put under strain, if you would like to help support  us in these difficult times, we have joined up with easyfunding.

Running Dates for May-December 2021


The railway operates a diesel service for visitors most Saturdays and Sundays, during the Rural Life Living Museum’s main opening season. Steam is usually reserved for the more popular special events, all dates are subject to change with regards to locomotive or volunteer availability.

Access to the railway is via the Rural Life Living Museum, train fares are £6 per Compartment for a maximum of 6 people, additional passengers within the compartment are £3 each.

Although every effort will be made to ensure a prompt departure, please be aware that there may be a slight delay as we clean and prepare for your journey.


Covid 19

When riding on our railway please be mindful of the social distancing measures to minimise the risk of covid-19.

Trains run from Oatlands Station, by the playground, from 11am until 15.30pm approximately.
With the following measures in place.

1) A one way system on and off the platform and waiting area outside of station.

2) A ticket office sited near the platform where we accept cashless payments as well. 

3) Trains will run as and when after cleaning of the carriages has taken place, you will then be allowed into the booking office area to purchase your tickets.

4) Restricted capacity : a maximum of 4 groups of up to 6 people will be allowed on the train at anyone time.

5) Social distancing of 2 meters apart.

While we operate Saturdays and Sundays, other dates maybe be announced via our website, Facebook page and Instagram.
